"Fear of Girls" Video

I just saw a very funny video entitled Fear of Girls. It's the 'Mockumentary' (Mock Documentary) of a pair of truly geeky... er, geeks.

The most funny (or sad) part about it, is that I understood most of the terms (LARP, Brujah clans, Druids, etc). I guess I also passed thru that phase sometime. Thankfully, I'm cured now. I think.

Anyway, thanks to revver.com, I present you the video Fear of Girls. Enjoy:

UPDATE: I've taken the video out, to make the page load faster, but you can still go to the link above.

Mac Pr0n

For all of you who are eager to look at the new Intel-based Apple laptops (The McBook Happy Deal), I have good news. Someone just bought one and posted a lot of pictures showing the unboxing process (and a couple comparing the new MBP with the 'old' PowerBook).

I'll probably wait for Revision 2 to happen (and enough money to buy one).

You could win a PSP just by using J2EE

In case you haven't found out by now, Sun is having a contest where you can Play with J2EE 1.4 SDK and Win a Sony PSP. I think this is a very cool way to promote J2EE 1.4, too bad I don't qualify because I'm not in one of the countries where the contest is open. Good thing I already have my own PSP to play with.

The only thing that I found kind of sad (or nostalgic) about it, is that the PSP doesn't include a JVM, and as far as I know, there is no JVM being made for the PSP. With its wireless capabilities, IR, USB, etc., this would be a very cool environment for Java programs. Throw in a good 3D Java API, and you could be creating cool games for the PSP (which is good for Sony and for Sun).

Blog from your firefox browser

I just found out a very nifty extension for firefox that lets you create new posts for your favorite blog software (pebble included, thru the blogger or the metablog API). Performancing For Firefox (PFF) is the extension, and it looks very nice, and hopefully behaves nice too.

(This post was created using PFF)

Personal finance software in Java

For those of you that like to keep a record of your personal finances, but don't want to pay for an application like Quicken or Microsoft Money, there are a couple of solutions available in the OSS realm, most notably gnucash.

But, if you want something that can run in various operating systems (win, mac, linux) you should really try using jGnash. It's a java-based OSS personal finance software that it's really easy to use. I've been using it for a month, and I like how easy it is for me to keep track of my expenses and incomes now.

There's another Java-based application, Moneydance, which isn't free. I used that one a couple of years ago, and it showed promise. A friend recommended it when I was looking for a finance software last month, and I think it has improved very much, so if you don't mind paying $29.99, this one is better in my opinion.

I hope more Java applications like these ones enter the market, because it will build the momentum needed to make Java in the desktop a reality.

And the winner (for best geek present) is...

I had a lot of interesting posts that I wanted to do, but something got in the way (besides lots of work, as usual). As you may be aware (from a previous post), my birthday was last saturday, and after a lot of consideration (i.e. getting the approval from my wife), I managed to buy myself a very nice birthday geek toy: A PSP (Playstation Portable).

I'm very impressed with what this baby can do (besides playing games, of course). With a nice and crisp screen and battery that lasts for hours, watching a movie is a really nice experience. With its wireless capabilities, you can browse the net and play other people online. Also, thanks to many enthusiasts, you can run 'homebrew' applications (apps created by individuals, not companies) that allows you to do more with your PSP (like listening to streaming audio) or even reading PDFs.

I have only one game for the console so far, but I see the potential for many other games, and I look closely at what people are creating for the PSP. I just wish there was an easier way for individuals to create apps/games for the PSP, instead of having to rely on firmware 'bugs' to be able to run applications.

Speaking of applications for the PSP, what I'd like is a way to play streamed videos on my PSP. While you can do that right now with Sony's LocationFree application (which comes with the latest firmware update for the PSP), it requires you to have a LocationFree base, which isn't cheap (~$200). I'm sure it's only a matter of time for someone to port an existing video player to the PSP, like VLC, and allow you more freedom to play whatever content you desire on your console.
