To JavaOne or Not to JavaOne

Ever since I started using Java back in 1997, I’ve wanted to go to a JavaOne event but was unable to. The closest I’ve been to one was two years ago, when I just happened to be on the same city (San Francisco) on a business trip.

But this year, even though technically I could go, I’m not so sure if I want to. I’ve yet to find a compelling reason to go and now that Oracle owns Sun (and therefore, Java), I don’t know if it will be the same. So, I have decided to ask any of you out there, Are going to JavaOne this year? Why?

I would go, if I would be at least in the same country. Reason: It is only about two years ago I started with Java and got into the community. And I love the community. So I would like to meet smart Java guys, I maybe only know from the web such as the Java posse guys.

But one reason why in general I go less on such big events is: You can’t do really more than a little small talk. For longer interesting discussions the smaller local events are better.

And regarding the news there is the internet so to keep on top there is no real reason to attend such conferences.

    HTH, Martin.
